Spike Fandango

Rieccomi qui! E' già passato un mese dal mio ultimo post, periodo in cui ho sbrigato le ultime incombenze prima di tornare al lavoro dopo un anno di maternità. Proprio così: ormai sono due settimane che corro tra casa mia - casa di mia mamma - lavoro e ritorno, col pupo al seguito nella prima parte del tragitto all'andata e nell'ultima al ritorno. Per il momento usufruisco dei permessi allattamento, tuttavia il tempo è sempre troppo poco - tanto più che il Precisino sembra aver preso da me e da mio marito e quindi di sera non vuole mai andare a dormire ma si rotola allegro ed energico nella sua palestrina (mentre suo padre ed io vegetiamo sul divano). Ma forse è proprio quando si ha poco tempo che si cerca di scavare quella mezz'oretta la sera per dedicarsi ai propri hobby. 

Potevo resistere al fascino delle nuove spike? Ovviamente no. Gli orecchini Fandango sembravano nati per sperimentare con questo tipo di perlina a forma di spina. Ed ecco il risultato: devo correggere ancora il tiro - ad esempio, trovare una maniera per fare in modo che le spike stiano dritte e non si girino - ma tanto questo paio resterà a me. E sì, lo so: devo ripassare i fondamenti di lavorazione col filo metallico, tecnica che mi è sempre piaciuta tantissimo ma per la quale sono, ahimé, negata.

Here I am, once again, after more than one month since my last post. I've been dealing with the last few things to do before going back to work after my one-year maternity leave. That's correct: over the last two weeks I've been running back and forth between home, my Mom's house, and my workplace, carrying the Little Precise One with me in the first part of the route to work and in the last on the way back. Although I'm currently taking advantage of the paid breastfeeding breaks (2 hours off each day), time is always too tight - besides that, apparently my son has taken after his parents and therefore he never wants to go to bed in the evening, but prefers to happily roll about on his activity mat while my husband and myself doze off on the sofa. Perhaps it's precisely when time is tight that one does the impossible to scrape half an hour off to dedicate to one's hobbies.

Could I resist to the new spike beads' allure? Of course not. The Fandango earrings seemed perfect to experiment with this thorn-shaped bead. And that's the result of my efforts: I have still to fine tune the project: for example, I have to find a way to make the spikes stay straight instead of turning around, but after all this pair is for me. And yes: I MUST revise my wirework skills, which, alas, have always been quite shaky in spite of my good will.

Orecchini Fandango - Fandango Earrings

Oramai sono lanciatissima nel mondo del micro-macramè, anche se, lo so da me, non sempre con risultati professionali. È il caso di questi orecchini "Fandango", tratti dal libro Wired Micro-Macramè Jewelry di Joan Babcock. Ma sapete una cosa? Non li devo mica vendere su Etsy (anzi, sarebbe illegale, essendo il modello ideato da un'altra persona, che peraltro che vive di questo). E chiunque li avrà li apprezzerà per quello che sono, e cioè una cosa fatta a mano diversa dalle solite.

By now, I'm totally engrossed into micro-macramè albeit, I must admit, not always with professional outcomes. This is the case for these "Fandango" earrings, taken from the book Wired Micro-Macramè Jewelry by Joan Babcock. But you know what? They're not going to be sold on Etsy anyway (actually, that would be technically illegal, since this is a pattern created by someone else who lives on selling jewelry and jewelry patterns). And whoever is going to get them would appreciate them for what they are: handmade jewelry seldom seen around.

La ragione delle imperfezioni è che, come al solito, ho sfruttato le perle che avevo già a casa  e queste erano di dimensioni diverse da quelle consigliate dall'autrice. Ho cercato di adattare, ma devo aver sbagliato i calcoli. Anche le spirali sono un tantino balenghe e per giunta non sono nemmeno riuscite a farle uguali! Eppure i due orecchini sono sovrapponibili, segno che gli angoli dei vari spicchi sono tutti pressoché uguali. E questa è una bella soddisfazione!

The reason for these faults is that, as usual, I scavenged my bead stash instead of buying new beads, and the beads I had were bigger than those suggested by the author. I tried adapting, but I must have got some measurement wrong. The spirals too are, frankly, a bit groggy and, besides that, I haven't managed to make them the same way! In spite of that, the two earrings are superposable so I must deduce that I made the angles of the "cloves" more or less the same size - which is quite a feat anyway!

Gemelli diversi - Different twins

Lo riconoscete? Ma sì, è sempre lui: Anna Bracelet di Joan Babcock. Con un'altra palette, con una sequenza in più di nodi nel motivo centrale (comunque prevista dall'autrice) e soprattutto con altre perline tra cui le Superduo, che non erano ancora state messe in commercio all'epoca della pubblicazione del libro da cui è tratto il progetto.  E il risultato è del tutto diverso, come potete vedere nella foto di confronto più in basso. 

Do you recognise it? Oh yes, it's Joan Babcock's Anna Bracelet, reloaded. Another palette, one more knotting sequence in the central motif (in any case provided by the author herself) and, most of all, different beads among which the Superduos, which hadn't been invented yet at the time the book containing the project was published. And the result is utterly different, as you can see in the photo comparing the two bracelets.

Le puriste storceranno il naso facendomi notare che il lavoro è irregolare: lo so, è perché alcune delle perline lo sono, ma credo che ciò faccia parte dello spirito del braccialetto; preziosa e raffinata la prima versione, "caciarona" ed estiva questa seconda. Presumo che chi ha apprezzato il primo braccialetto, amerà di meno questo e viceversa.

Purists would raise an eyebrow noticing that the work is pretty irregular: I know, that's because some of the beads are, but I think that this is part of the overall style; the first bracelet was precious-looking and stylish, this one is lively and inspired by summertime. I suppose that those of you who particularly liked the first one, wouldn't like this one so much and viceversa.

Tutto sommato sono abbastanza soddisfatta anche se secondo me le Superduo avrebbero potuto essere valorizzate ancora di più, ma nonostante avessi disegnato uno schema prima di iniziare, il risultato è stato molto diverso dall'atteso. D'altra parte è solo facendo che si capisce che aspetto avrà il lavoro. Sembra banale ma non lo è. Io avevo pensato che le Superduo si sarebbero disposte con le punte verso il centro - creando quindi una specie di croce - e invece si sono disposte nel senso della lunghezza, creando una sorta di quadrato attorno alla perla rossa centrale.

After all, I'm happy enough with the result though I wish I had exploited the Superduos in a better way. The truth is that, although I had drawn a sketch before beginning to knot, the final result was very different from what I had expected. It sounds trivial to say that it's only by making things that you really see how the work will look, but it's not so. For example, I had thought that the Superduos would turn their points towards the centre, while exactly the opposite happened: instead of the expected "cross", I got a "square" framing the central red bead.

Sì, è un'altra delle mie allucinanti battute. Se aveste sentito quelle di mio padre buonanima... Vabbe'. Spero che il Precisino non prenda dalla mia famiglia, almeno in questo. Però a parte gli scherzi, questo più che un post è proprio un post-it, cioè un promemoria. Perché quello che vedete qua sotto, l'ormai celeberrimo ciondolo "Roi Soleil" di Marta Della Vedova, diventato una specie di esame di abilitazione professionale per le tutte le perlinatrici italiane, non è un'opera finita. O meglio, lo sarebbe se rimanesse un ciondolo, ma io lo voglio far diventare qualcos'altro, perché di ciondoli vistosissimi ne ho a bizzeffe (e non posso né voglio darli via, poiché si tratta di "opere prime" che tengo per me, un po' per ricordo, un po' perché contengono quasi sempre qualche piccola imperfezione). Solo che non so quando questo Roi Soleil diventerà qualcos'altro, anche se so cosa diventerà. Perciò, intanto ve lo mostro, perché sarebbe finito; ma sappiate che più avanti ci sarà un altro post su questo progetto, e sarà un post vero, non un promemoria. 

Yet another awful pun of mine. You should have heard my late father's ones... Well. I hope the Little Precise One won't go after my family, at least in this area. No jokes now: this is a post-it, that is, a reminder, more than an ordinary post. In fact, what you see in the pictures, namely the famous "Roi Soleil" pendant by Marta Della Vedova - by now a kind of general certificate exam for all Italian beaders - is not finished. Or rather, it would be if it had been destined to remain a pendant, but I want it to become something else because I'm up to my eyes with flashy pendants that I cannot and I don't want to give away, since they're first attempts which I keep for memory's sake and because they always contains some slight fault. Only thing is - I've no idea WHEN this Roi Soleil will become something else, although I know exactly WHAT it will become. Therefore, I'm showing it to you because it is, as a matter of fact, finished; but be warned! There will be another post on this project, and it will be a real post, not a reminder.
